Ten major palm oil producers and buyers are collaborating to develop a new and publicly available radar-based forest monitoring system known as Radar Alerts for Detecting Deforestation (RADD).

The RADD system takes into account satellite data to provide high spatial detail such that current optical-based satellite imagery is augmented.

The system is currently being developed for Indonesia and Malaysia, and has the potential to detect deforestation several weeks faster than a traditional optical-based system.
